Trivia[]
The show got good ratings on Teletoon when it debuted on the channel in 2006, so it should come as no surprise that the network was quick to order new seasons and transform the show into their biggest franchise once they got word of the first season's huge success in the United States. Throughout the late 2000s and late 2010s, Teletoon gave The Connor and Sparky Show plenty of healthy airings at accessible hours for its audience, lots of visible advertising, opportunities for young viewers to interact with the show.
- It was also been treated very nicely by Cartoon Network ever since it came to the channel in May of 2006, and has since proven to be Teletoon's most successful series in the United States. Throughout 2006 and 2015, the show always received heavy promotion and plenty of airtime during the spring and summer, with the network even sacrificing time usually reserved for major airwave hogs just to prepare for a new season and make room for reruns of the previous seasons.
- The show became very extremely popular in the US, Canada, Latin America & Japan.
- The Other Marty: Jillian Michaels was billed to voice Tabitha before being replaced by Tabitha St. Germain.
- Tabitha and Cindy are pretty close for "best friends", but this is a kids show.
- The show's production blog had a post featuring a drawing of the girls in a distinctly non-heterosexual passionate embrace. This was said to be inspired by Tabitha St. Germain and Kathleen Barr's amused reactions to the show's implied homo-eroticism, asking why the showrunners were "writing them as gay." Of course, it also had a series of drawings involving Tabitha falling victim to an Alien chestburster which Cindy then dispatched with a knife, so it was quite clearly not a network-approved source of series information.
- This was actually toned down after season 4, with the girls not hugging nearly as much, but the hints are still there.
- CN licensed this show for distribution in the United States and treated it well for a couple of years, until November 2016, when reruns of the show were burned off 8:30 am. The series would continue to rerun in that same slot for some years before it left the channel completely in August 2017.
- According to a voting event CN held in 2008 with another Teletoon show, Drew T. Doodle, Most people voted Tabitha because she had a lot of screentime in the show, and was the most adorable character in the show, and was favorited by so many kids aged 9 to 12. The show has a 12.9/10 rating on IMDB.
- Avery Lesane supervised voice work on the show and even supervised on the international dubs of the show.
- Season 1's "A Battle of Two Best Friends" won a Writer's Guild of Canada award in 2007 for "Best comedy and writing"
- Of note, TCASS was Cartoon Network's first Canadian 2D animated show to be produced 100% digitally: the backgrounds were all drawn in Photoshop and the animation was done in-house in Adobe Flash. with the aide of graphics tablets. This not only brought down the cost and shrank the staff, but allowed for the nuances of Avery Lesane's personal drawing style to come through in the final product rather than the blocky, geometric look Flash had been known for up to that point.
- This is also the first Kearplax-produced show to get dubbed in other countries.
- The voice cast of the show would later reprise their roles for Skatoony, with Renegade Animation animating the TCASS characters
- In Enter: Lauren, Lauren Wilmore (The mother of Laia & Garik) from Those Kids from Zippyville which is another show made by Kearplax makes a Cameo in Tabitha’s third & final nightmare
- Cindy and Tabitha, both of them are the right amount of adorkable; the former is an innocent robot girl whose debut episode revolves around her adjusting to tween culture and the latter is as brainy as she is a friendly nice girl. Not to mention their friendship is especially heart-meltingly sweet.
- Despite being a success on both CN and Teletoon and definitely a series many people remember very much due to reruns continuing on said channels, The Connor and Sparky Show did okay for itself. It tended to do well in ratings. It had a vinyl figure set by Kidrobot, bunch of toys by Playmates Toys and Hasbro, books by Panini, Grosset and Dunlap, 3 games for the Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS, a trading card game that lasted from 2007 until 2016 with fairly regular releases every year, and the trading card game did reportedly sold well in other countries too.
- Adored by the Network: The show did quite well in its native Canada (and the UK, where it aired on ITV's "Toonattik" block and Cartoon Network UK), as Teletoon treated it as a flagship series. It aired new episodes on the Saturday morning Laugh Riot block, and reran on the Monday-Thursday (later Sunday) primetime block 3 Hours of Awesome, being promoted alongside other major Teletoon series of the time like Johnny Test and Total Drama and being cross-promoted through the characters appearing on Skatoony even after the show ended. This treatment from its home channel was probably what allowed the show to survive with four seasons despite getting the short end of the stick in other countries.
- The pilot, naturally, has been subjected to many, starting with the fact that the pilot itself is but was part of Kearplax's short-lived incubator project "Salute Your Shows" rather than a fully conceptualized first episode.
- The common story is that the pilot tells the story of how Connor and Sparky met Junior, Tabitha and the twins. However, Chris Savino, the show's devleloper and writer has stated that was only covered in the pilot's intro sequence, and the actual animation test was simply Connor trying to help out his neighbors.
History and Production[]
The series started as a pilot in 2002. It was originally pitched around to CBS and ABC, but after no success, Avery Lesane, along with his production company, Kearplax Entertainment Group and Film Roman, took the project to Canada, where it was picked up by Studio B Productions and Teletoon. The series entered development in 2004, and it would soon be greenlit for 39 half-hour episodes in early 2005. Production would officially begin in February.
On March 21, 2005, after purchasing Film Roman, their new owner IDT Entertainment announced they had licensed out the TV rights for the series to Cartoon Network. while Warner Bros Television would handle TV distribution in the US and outside of Canada, IDT would handle television, home entertainment rights, and Kearplax handles merchandising and licensing rights for the rest of the world.
Animation for the show was done using a process involving Adobe softwares Photoshop, Animate and After Effects. Most of the episodes were produced by Studio B Productions in Vancouver, British Columbia, while the rest were produced at Renegade Animation in Glendale, Top Draw Animation in the Philippines, Fatkat Animation Studios in New Brunswick, Boulder Media in Ireland, Elliott Animation in Toronto, and Copernicus Studios in Halifax.
Kearplax based in New York and Los Angeles, wrote the scripts, co-directed, and produced designs for the show. Canada co-directed, produced storyboards, voice recording, animation and post production through Studio B, Voicebox Productions, and Dick and Roger's Sound Studio. Film Roman also did storyboards, and Starz Media (now Starz Distribution) handled worldwide distribution outside of Canada.
Broadcast[]
The Connor and Sparky Show premiered on Teletoon in Canada on June 12, 2006. The series formerly aired on Cartoon Network from May 16, 2006 until May 22, 2018, in the U.S. and Qubo from October 10, 2009 until October 12, 2019. It first aired on CITV in the United Kingdom on November 1, 2006, the show continued to broadcast and then re-broadcast on CITV until it was effectively taken off schedule after 6–7 years sometime in 2021. Starz Kids and Family formerly picked up the series, but only for Seasons 1, 2 and 4 because Season 3 was too expensive for the Starz brand to afford until it was later removed from its weekday morning lineup. It also aired repeats in Canada on Cartoon Network and Teletoon until 2023 when it became Boomerang and Cartoon Network. BBC Kids aired it until the channel was closed in 2018.
