Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an animated action adventure television series created by Dooplimations and Myriam Ballesteros for Nintendo Co, Ltd., and is a tie-in to the 2004 video game of the same name for the Nintendo GameCube.

The series is co-produced by SLR Productions, Southern Star Entertainment, Nerd Corps Entertainment, Mike Young Entertainment, Taffy Entertainment, Icon Animation, Millimages, Nelvana, and Nintendo Co. Ltd. for Seven Network in Australia, YTV in Canada, and Cartoon Network in the United States.

The series is an Australian-Canadian co-production and was originally produced in English, yet the Japanese dub serves as the world premiere of the series, as it premiered in November 2004.

Trivia[]

  • Many events in the series are shuffled out of order from the events in the game, for example:
    • Mario gains Yoshi as a party-member early-on in episode 3b of season 1 despite the fact he was introduced in chapter 3 of the game, titled "Of Glitz and Glory", which was adapted fully in episode 12 of season 1.
    • Vivian's reconciliation with Beldam and Marilyn in the show takes place before the final battle, despite it taking place in the post-game in the original.
    • Chapter 6 is adapted earlier than other chapters, in episode 7 of season 1.
  • Two characters from the first Paper Mario game, Kooper and Watt, never showed up in the Thousand-Year Door outside of cameos, but play major roles in episode 6 of season 2 of the show.
  • The series was produced in widescreen (16:9) format. However, most channels aired it in fullscreen (4:3).
    • The only channels to air the series in its original format were Seven Network, its sister channel 7Two, YTV, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and CBBC.
  • During development, Energee Entertainment was supposed to produce the show, but due to its closure, it was taken over by SLR.
  • This show uses translated versions of the game and rewrites them as a base for the dialogue created exclusively for the show.
    • Since most of the dubs never received corresponding translation for the game, they use specifically written scripts based off the English version, rather than using the rewritten game translation.
  • There exists a British Sign Language version that aired on CBBC where the original Canadian version of the show would play while a sign language reader would translate it to BSL on-screen. This was shown during Sign Zone, while the regular version without the reader was shown outside of Sign Zone.

History[]

Prior to the show's existence, Nintendo Co, Ltd. commissioned a computer animated short simply titled Paper Mario as a tie-in to the Nintendo 64 game, which was planned to be produced by a newly set up animation studio based in Canada named R.C.S., and set to air on Oh Yeah! Cartoons in 2001, possibly to pitch the series to Nickelodeon. However, plans fell through, and the short never materialized.

The series began production in August 2003 after Nintendo Co, Ltd struck a deal with SLR Productions and Nelvana to create a show based on their upcoming game at the time, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The first season was finished by July 2004, and was slated to premiere in November of the same year, a month after the game launched in North America, however, it missed the deadline and it would end up being delayed by 2005. This was due to rewrites that were ordered by Nintendo of America to match the English translation of the game.

Animation was handled by SLR Productions, along with Nerd Corps Entertainment, R.C.S. (which was bought out by Nintendo of America in 2003 and renamed Dooplimations, after the character), Elliott Animation, Fatkat, Arc Productions, Bardel Entertainment, and Top Draw Animation.

The cast was revealed in late 2004, with it being revealed that none of the current voice-actors for the Mario series would be reprising their roles (with the exception of Samantha Kelly as the Toads, even though she doesn't play Princess Peach). Additionally, many of the game's voice actors were given cameo roles.

In June 2004, Canadian television network YTV commissioned 26 episodes of the series for its programming block of cartoons, The Zone. The series finally premiered in March 2005, to positive reviews. However, prior to that, the series had already premiered on NHK E in November 2004.

A sequel series, entitled Paper Luigi: The Pursuit of Mr. L was produced, being an adaptation/tie-in to the Wii game Super Paper Mario. A reboot/retelling of both shows, entitled Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: Welcome Back to Rogueport! was produced to coincide with the release of the Nintendo Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, although it came out a year after.

Broadcast[]

The series originally aired on Seven Network in Australia from March 28, 2005 until December 31, 2008. It also aired on its sister channel 7TWO from 2009 until 2011.

In Canada, it aired on YTV from April 17, 2005 to January 18, 2009, as part of its block of cartoons called The Zone.

In the United States, it aired on Cartoon Network from June 24, 2005 to February 19, 2011. It also aired on Boomerang from October 12, 2009 to sometime in 2013.

The series was also available on the streaming service KidMango from its start in 2009 until its closure in 2013. The series was made available on the 3DS eShop and Nintendo Anime Channel (in Europe only) in 2016, split into 7 volumes, but was made unavailable after the 3DS eShop was closed.

Episodes of the series were planned to be released on GameBoy Advance Video cartridges, but plans were cancelled due to the low sales of the format. Rumors of a UMD release of the first season were spread around the internet sometime in 2007, but was later confirmed to have never been in any discussion regarding the format to Nelvana.
